Now that my site has been up for a couple of weeks, it’s occurred to me that I’ve unknowingly undertaken a solemn responsibility: blogging. Blogging is, in fact, a little like marriage, isn’t it? I agree to write and occasionally update a blog with some modicum of entertainment value, and any surfers that stumble by promise to read the blog and maybe, if I’m really, really lucky, add me to their favorites list. And if I don’t live up to my end of the relationship, I fully expect my site to be dumped in favor of a younger, thinner, sexier blog.
Agreed? Good.
Now let’s talk about that “modicum of entertainment value” part.
Oh, I’ve seen what the other romance authors have out there: clever, timely blogs updated constantly if not daily. Links to other amazing blogs and resources for readers and writers. Reviews, commentary–the list goes on and on.
You don’t expect anything like that from me, do you?
When do all those fantastic bloggers out there (and you know who you are) find time to write their books? Do they have more than twenty-four hours in their days? Do they take stimulants? Do they have ghost-bloggers who do the actual blogging for them?
Someone please tell me–what is the secret? How do you keep up with a great blog AND write thrilling books?
Anyone? Anyone?
Right.
Since my focus is on learning the craft and writing better books, let’s go ahead and try to set some ground rules so everyone knows what they’re getting (and not getting) with this blog:
1. I will try to take my responsibility as a blogger seriously;
2. I will try to blog once a week(ish);
3. I will try to be moderately entertaining;
4. I will try to blog about the writer’s life;
5. I will try not to preach (too much);
6. I cannot be expected to blog when I’m feeling (insert one of the following here):
· Grumpy
· Tired
· Hungry
· Annoyed
· Anxious
· Bored
7. I cannot be expected to blog when “The Today Show,” “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” or “Apprentice: Martha Stewart” is on; and
8. I cannot be expected to blog when a new Sandra Brown or Karen Robards book hits the stands.
That’s reasonable, isn’t it?
Feel free to add the blog to your favorites list.
